April 27 was National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. This year the Drug Enforcement Administration celebrated its 26th year of the event with nearly 13 tons of collected prescription drugs.

“This past Saturday, often in challenging weather, people brought in their unneeded, unwanted or expired prescription medications to dozens of locations across Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and Montana,” the DEA’s Office stated.

Colorado collected 10,017 pounds of prescription drugs. Utah collected the most in the region with 12,530 pounds gathered.

Although these events happen on the final Saturdays of April and October, many pharmacies and other locations are available year-round. Longmont Public Safety has a kiosk in its lobby. There are several locations throughout Longmont.

After the drugs are collected, they are boxed and loaded onto pallets. The pallets are transported to a designated destruction facility where they are incinerated in a safe and effective manner, the DEA stated.
