The DA’s office is one of five offices in the country to be selected for the innovative program

NEWS RELEASE
BOULDER COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE

The (Boulder County) District Attorney’s Office is proud to partner with the Public Rights Project to host a fellow for the next two years. PRP is a national organization that bridges the gap between the promise of the laws on the books and the experiences of underrepresented communities by supporting state and local law offices to develop additional capacity to enforce the rights of all community members.

The District Attorney’s Office is one of five offices in the country to be selected for this innovative program and one of only two district attorney’s offices.

The PRP fellowship will expand community engagement and strategies to enforce community members’ legal rights. PRP and the Boulder DA’s office worked together in a national search for fellows and are excited to announce that Alex Cárdenas has been hired and will now be working with the DA’s office.

The cost of Cárdenas’ position is paid by PRP; he will serve as an important member of the DA’s office over the next two years. His work at the DA’s office will focus on wage theft, immigrant rights and community engagement.

Cárdenas worked as a law clerk for three years in the Eastern District of New York and the District of Vermont. He attended Fordham University School of Law, where he earned distinction for performing more than 1,000 hours of pro bono work during his tenure. Cárdenas was previously a part of the Coro Fellowship in Public Affairs and, following his graduation from law school, he served as an honors attorney with the U.S. Department of Labor.

“Our office is committed to enhancing public safety and improving the justice system. It is an honor to be selected for this prestigious program. With no cost to the taxpayers, it will allow us to enhance our robust efforts to protect our most vulnerable residents and immigrants from wage theft and abuse," said District Attorney Michael Dougherty. "I am excited to work with the Public Rights Project to further strengthen our work for everyone in Boulder County.”

“The addition of Alex Cárdenas as a PRP Fellow at the DA’s Office will allow the office to expand our focus on community engagement and protecting vulnerable individuals in our community. We are excited to welcome Alex to the office,” said Christian Gardner-Wood, Director of Community Protection and Legislative Affairs for the DA’s Office.
