Cyclocross racing began in Europe during the early 1900s. This type of bike racing is a way for road bikers to stay fit during the fall and winter. Known as CX or simply ‘Cross’, bikers race along a course that is typically off-road with obstacles and differing terrain forcing riders to hop on and off their bikes, carrying them as they go. Riders can expect to encounter grass, mud, dirt, gravel, sand and steep hills on each cyclocross course.

Races will start at Sandstone at 8 a.m., and races vary in length from 20 minutes to one hour. The course is quick and action-packed, so spectators are rarely bored. Dress in layers, bring a hot beverage, and don’t forget your cowbell when you cheer on some of the nation’s best bikers at the Rocky Mountain Regional Cyclocross Championships on Saturday, Dec. 2. For more information on this year’s championships, please click here.
