Julie Baxter has joined the Longmont Leader as assistant editor.

What a thrill it is for me to join the Longmont Leader as its assistant editor and welcome you to this site as well. My sincere hope is together we can make the Leader something special.

I love community journalism, and if you’re reading this I have a hunch you do, too.

Why the emphasis on community? Because community is what the Leader is all about. This is not just another news site where you can read the day’s headlines and the basic weather report. Don’t get me wrong, headlines and weather stats are important and you’ll find them all at the Leader, but our goal is to go deeper.

We want to share stories that create a sense of place as the city grows. Those stories start with you, with your friends, with your neighbors and it is our wish to tell them. As a Colorado native and nearly lifelong journalist, I am elated by the prospect of getting to do so.

Having worked at newspapers throughout the state from the Eastern Plains to the Western Slope during my 25-plus-year career (age jokes are OK by me), joining the team at the Leader has energized me. Not only am I excited to keep doing what I love, but to do so at a brand-new venture that seeks to do things differently.

Being brand-new allows for experimentation and new thinking that too often doesn’t happen in traditional newsrooms. It gives us the opportunity to listen and learn what you want and need from the Leader as your news source, and for us to find a way to be that and more.

Simply put it allows us to be your newsroom, and I am eager to embark on the journey to be just that with you by our sides.

So I’ll say it again: Hello Longmont. I’m glad to be here and can’t wait to hear from you. Please share your story ideas and thoughts on what the Leader can do to cover your community by emailing me at [email protected] or with the entire newsroom by emailing [email protected].
