A fire in Prospect on Monday evening leave several residents displaced overnight.

Around 7:06 p.m. the Longmont Fire Department was alerted to a fire alarm in the 2000 block of Ionosphere St. where they discovered several ground-level businesses filled with smoke and heat, according to a news release from Longmont Public Safety.

Fourteen residential properties — which occupy the upper levels of the building — were evacuated.

Due to the size of the building and the residential properties in the upper levels, a second alarm was raised for the event. Thirteen fire and rescue units responded to the fire.

Fire crews discovered an activated sprinkler in a business undergoing renovation at 645 Tenacity Drive — which is in the same building the fire alarm came from. Crews entered the building and found heavy smoke. They were able to extinguish the remaining fire.

No fire damage was found in the residential properties, however, fire crews discovered smoke and carbon monoxide exposure. The city of Longmont building inspectors are in the process of assessing the structural damage before determining if residents are able to return to their homes, according to the news release.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to the news release.
