Boulder Public Library Announces Winners of 2025 Library Card Design Contest

Five community members, including three children, won this year’s Boulder Public Library Card Design Contest. Their artwork will be featured on new cards launching June 1 alongside the Summer of Discovery reading program.

The Boulder Public Library (BPL) announced the five winning designs for the Boulder Public Library Card Design Contest, which will be available at all locations starting on June 1 as the library kicks off its Summer of Discovery program, an annual reading challenge that runs from June 1 through July 31.

BPL hosted the contest from March 1 to 3, during which the organization invited community members to share their “best global designs or highlight the many connections you see in our world” for artwork for new library cards. Acceptable art forms included digital media, fine art, and photography.

The library announced that two adult winners and three children would be selected to have their art featured on this year’s cards, with winners to be chosen in April. Online voting took place earlier this month to select the community’s favorite adult designs. Children’s winners were decided by contest organizers.

The adult winners of the contest were Anica Chavez-Grandits and Eliza Lewis. The child winners were five-year-old Jules S., seven-year-old Xander S., and 11-year-old Colette.

BPL Public Services Department Manager Tim McClelland said that people can begin registering for Summer of Discovery on May 1 and begin picking up prizes on June 1. Pre-readers, kids, and teens get one free book at registration and adults receive a free entry to a parks and recreation facility at registration.

This year, participants will track their reading times and activities to earn points and win prizes, McClelland said. Once readers reach 500 points, they are eligible for prizes. All finishers of the program will receive a coupon for a free ice cream at Cold Stone Creamery, a free entry to Gateway Fun Park, and an entry into the BPL’s grand prize drawings. Prizes will be available until August 14, while supplies last.

The grand prize drawings will occur at the end of the summer. For pre-readers, the grand prize is a Strider bike; for kids and teens, the grand prize is a gift card for a cooking class at the Food Lab; and for adults, the grand prize is a gift card for a class at Colorado Glass Works.
