NEWS RELEASE

The City of Longmont has been recognized by the Climate Disclosure Project (CDP) as a leader in climate action with an overall score of A minus. The CDP is a global non-profit that runs the world’s environmental disclosure system for companies, cities, states and regions. This is the City’s fourth time submitting to the CDP and the second score of an A or A minus.

To score an A minus, among other actions, a local government must have a community-wide emissions inventory and have published a climate action plan. It must also have taken steps to assess and plan to adapt to climate change. Actions completed by the City of Longmont that helped achieve this goal include:

  1. Setting a target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 66% from a 2016 baseline.

  • This target is a science-based target that aligns with the goals set by the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

  • View progress towards this goal on Longmont Indicators. Staff are currently completing the 2024 citywide greenhouse gas inventory.

  • To achieve a score of an A in the future, the City will need to set a target of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

  1. Completed the Climate Risk Mapping tool to better understand localized risk of climate change.

  • Extreme is one of the primary climate hazards facing the City of Longmont. This year, staff are educating the community on ways to keep cool in the summer.

The City of Longmont is committed to implementing actions and targets set in the City’s Sustainability Plan and Climate Action Recommendations Report and continuing to be a local leader in reducing pollution and adapting to climate change.
