The City Council Tuesday will decide if Juneteenth National Independence Day should be added as a city holiday.
Council members in November asked city staff members to present an ordinance to include Juneteenth as a paid city holiday. On July1, 2021 the council passed a resolution recognizing the significance of Juneteenth and “encouraged the observation, celebration and commemoration of this holiday,” according to a city staff report to the council.
The city currently recognizes 10 employee paid holidays:
- New Year’s Day
- Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
- President’s Day
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Veterans Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Day after Thanksgiving
- Christmas Day
Juneteenth became a federal holiday in June 2021 and commemorates the official end of slavery in the United States.
