The City Council Tuesday will decide if Juneteenth National Independence Day should be added as a city holiday.

Council members in November asked city staff members to present an ordinance to include Juneteenth as a paid city holiday. On July1, 2021 the council passed a resolution recognizing the significance of Juneteenth and “encouraged the observation, celebration and commemoration of this holiday,” according to a city staff report to the council.

The city currently recognizes 10 employee paid holidays:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
  • President’s Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Veterans Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Day after Thanksgiving
  • Christmas Day

Juneteenth became a federal holiday in June 2021 and commemorates the official end of slavery in the United States.
