Juneteenth is the annual celebration of the emancipation of enslaved people in the U.S. The holiday began in Galveston, Texas in 1865. Slaves were declared free in 1862, however, those in Texas did not receive word for three years.

Longmont hosts an annual event that will take place on June 22 from 1-6 p.m. at Roosevelt Park.

This year’s event will include music and entertainment with headliner Chrisette Michele, a Grammy-award-winning artist known for “her soulful and captivating performances,” a news release stated.

“Michele's presence at the event will undoubtedly make this Juneteenth Celebration a historic moment in Longmont's history,” according to the news release.

In addition to Michele’s performance, a lineup of talented DJs will keep the energy going as attendees wander among the vendor booths and explore a variety of food options from local food trucks.

The event is family-friendly and free to the public to come together to “celebrate their shared heritage,” said Shiquita Yarbrough, event planner, community leader and Longmont City Council member.
