Juneteenth Outdoor Community Celebration with Congressman Joe Neguse.

On June 19, the City of Longmont will host its first outdoor Juneteenth celebration. The event will be at Roosevelt Park from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Shiquita Yarbough, the event organizer, has described this event as a community focused event, where talent in the African-American community will not only be highlighted, but celebrated.

“The main reason to have this event is to bring people together, bring the community together. So we can learn and understand different cultures, and I feel like when you understand a culture you can understand who they are, and maybe have a little more compassion for what that group has gone through,” Yarbough said.

The event will begin with a high school drumline. Doctor Tamika Robinson will be the emcee for the event. She will be integrating education about Juneteenth and African-American culture throughout the event.  The first ever black Colorado senator, Joe Neguse will be the keynote speaker. There will be a fashion show from the first black designer at Banana Republic, Prep Curry, who will also be selling his clothing at the event. The event will close with a gentleman who does line dancing, and get the crowd up and dancing, according to Yarbough.
