Sunset Pool in Longmont will remain closed over Memorial Day weekend due to unexpected mechanical issues.
The problem arose from a leak in one of the underground pipes that runs from the bottom of the diving well to the pump room, where the pool motors are located, according to Suellen Rau, Longmont recreation area supervisor.
The cost to repair the leak in the underground pipe is estimated to be $8,200.
The city hopes to complete all pool repairs by Friday and start filling the pool with water. However, just because the pool is full of water does not mean it is ready for swimming yet, Rau said. The water needs to be treated with chemicals to make it safe.
Typically, Sunset Pool, 1900 Longs Peak Ave., opens on either the Thursday or Friday prior to Memorial Day.
Sunset Pool is a heated outdoor pool with six lap lanes, a large wading area, three diving boards and two waterslides. Its depth ranges from approximately 6-inches deep in the shallow end to 11-feet deep in the diving well, according to the city’s website.
An opening date for Sunset Pool has not yet been announced but is expected soon. Kanemoto Activity Pool is scheduled to open on Friday, May 30 and Roosevelt Activity Pool is expected to open on Friday, June 6.
The city is still actively hiring lifeguards and those interested in applying can email
