An unnamed man is now deceased after exchanging gun fire with Greeley police officers on June 18. The incident started yesterday evening at 8:12 p.m. when a Greeley officer initiated a traffic stop near the University of Northern Colorado (UNC) campus after the driver failed to yield to the police officers. The officers were aware that the suspect had an active felony warrant for theft of a motor vehicle. The man did not stop the vehicle.

Officers found the man walking at the UNC campus and told members of the public to leave the area. The man brandished a gun and two police officers pursued the suspect on foot while giving loud verbal commands to drop the weapon. Two other officers came from the opposite side. The man was still holding the gun as he was near the Garden Theatre.

The man turned towards these two officers while still holding the gun. An officer was heard on the radio stating that shots were being fired in his direction. The initial press release stated the man discharged the firearm and the officers returned fire. The latest press release states that “the man was shot by officers and sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

The initial press release posted Wednesday night said that the man was transported to the hospital and his condition was unknown. The updated release from Weld County Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT), released on June 19, said that the man is deceased and his identity will be released by the Weld County Coroner’s Office.

The investigation is ongoing for this case and information will be released as it becomes available. CIRT initiated an investigation into an officer-related shooting last month after a Greeley officer fatally shot a man who was brandishing a knife. There are no current updates on that investigation.
