How to Talk About Teen Suicide Prevention

Despite progress around mental health acceptance and treatment, teens and parents alike report that teen suicide is still a delicate and difficult topic to broach with children, parents, and friends. To help facilitate those conversations, the Longmont Youth Center and the Longmont Public Library will present a timely and important program, “13 Reasons Why NOT,” about teen suicide, its causes, and its prevention from 5:30 to 8 pm on Thursday, August 3, at the Library, 409 4th Avenue. No registration required.

Free Landfill Drop Day

The City of Longmont offers residents an opportunity to take one level pickup load free of charge to the Front Range Landfill at 1830 Weld County Road 5 in Erie from 6 am to 2 pm on Saturday, August 5. Loads must be covered and secured; oversize loads and second loads will be billed. Please take a photo ID and a copy of your current utility bill to show that you are a City of Longmont customer. For more information on this event visit LongmontColorado.gov/solidwaste or call 303-651-8416.

Sales and Use Tax Seminar

A free seminar that will answer all your questions will be held from 10 am to noon on Wednesday, August 9, in the Study Session Room at the Civic Center, 350 Kimbark Street. Topics include sales tax basics, use tax overview, point of taxation information, and manufacturing and R&D exemptions. Attendees will be entered into a drawing for a Downtown Longmont gift card. Unhappy with the World? Make it Better!

Margaret Mead once reminded us that the only thing that has ever changed the world was “a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens.” Stop by the Longmont Public Library at 409 4th Avenue between 10 am and noon on Saturday, August 5, to learn how you can become one of those world-changers by volunteering in our community. No registration necessary. Just drop in and discover the opportunities that await you.

What Do You Think About Short-term Rentals?

The City of Longmont is looking at options for addressing short-term vacation rentals as part of the larger update to the City’s Land Development Code. Short-term rentals, such as through Airbnb, VRBO and Flipkey, are popular options in many communities, but the City’s current codes don’t address these uses. The City is considering adopting rules to allow short-term rentals in Longmont. Please share your thoughts on this topic by completing a short survey at surveymonkey.com/r/S6JR6WQ. The deadline is August 20.
