Boulder County has released the application for the next round of Strategic Fuels Mitigation Grants (SFMG). Project funding is available for local government agencies, fire protection districts, and community organizations to increase the pace and scale of wildfire mitigation across the county.

Established in 2023, the SFMG program has awarded over $1.5 million to support projects such as grassland mowing and grazing, forest thinning, prescribed burns, and the development of Community Wildfire Protection Plans (CWPP). The SFMG program emphasizes funding for large landscape-scale or community-wide projects that actively engage landowners.

“This is a great opportunity for communities and partners to come together to mitigate fuels as part of their wildfire protection measures,” said Meg Halford, Boulder County Wildfire Partners Forest and Grasslands project coordinator.

"The SFMG program is vital to help reduce the risk of wildfire to Boulder County communities,” shared Mike Palamara, Wildland Division Chief of Boulder Mountain Fire Protection District.

“Our district has received SFMG support for fuels reduction projects and the update of our CWPP. With the help of these funds, Boulder County communities will be better prepared for the next wildfire event."

The SFMG program is funded by the county’s wildfire mitigation sales and use tax.

The grant application window for the spring 2024 cycle is April 25 through June 6. A second cycle for 2024 will open in the fall.
