Birth Center re-establishes itself as woman-owned, independent and freestanding

BOULDER BIRTH AND HOLISTIC HEALTH

On Oct. 1, 2023, Boulder Birth & Holistic Health (formerly known as the Birth Center of Boulder) will divest from Boulder Community Health (BCH). While the best of intentions were laid to incorporate out-of-hospital, midwifery-led care as a birth choice into the wider medical model, the past several years have proved too financially straining for hospitals nationwide, and BCH no longer has the capacity to maintain the birth center under their umbrella. 

In its nine years of service to families, the birthing center has supported over 2,000 families and welcomed nearly 1,000 babies.

The new name, Boulder Birth & Holistic Health, reflects a commitment to expanding services to meet community needs beyond the prenatal journey. BBHH will continue to provide evidence-based, individualized prenatal, birth, postpartum, early newborn, gynecological and sexual health care. BBHH recognizes the holistic interdependence that supports perinatal health and wellbeing and will expand offerings to include in-house perinatal mental health services, lactation support and pelvic floor therapy. BBHH seeks to support the reproductive continuum by growing gynecological services with a particular focus on adolescent health as well as perimenopause/menopause care. 

“We are seizing this opportunity to “rebirth” our beloved birth center, and to rethink what is possible as we safeguard and expand this model of care for our community,” says Abrie Koupal, midwife.

A community fundraising event will be held Saturday, Aug. 19, 4-8 p.m, at 2800 Folsom St in Boulder. This joyous event will include a silent auction, food and beverages, music plus family-friendly entertainment to celebrate the birth center’s 9th birthday while also serving as an opportunity to preserve all birth choices in our community! The silent auction has already opened Aug. 12.
