Construction impacts for the week of Aug. 13, 2023

The closures will allow crews to paint new lane striping, relocate barriers and switch traffic onto new lanes as the project progresses

Berthoud to Johnstown

Sunday through Tuesday at 5 p.m., a full closure of Weld County Road 46, east of I-25, is planned to allow crews to pour concrete manhole aprons at several locations along WCR 46 to reinforce the manhole structures and create a smoother roadway transition.

  • Westbound WCR 46 traffic will take Colorado Boulevard south to Weld County Road 44, turn west, and continue under I-25 on Colorado Highway 56 to County Road 7, turn north and travel to WCR 46.
     
  • Eastbound WCR 46 traffic will take CR 7 south to CO 56, turn east and continue under I-25 on WCR 44 to Colorado Boulevard, turn north and travel to WCR 46.

Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., the left lanes of Colorado Highway 60 over I-25 will be closed for grading work.

There will be an overnight traffic switch on northbound I-25 on Wednesday, with temporary full closures of the northbound I-25 on-ramps at CO 56 and 60, and the northbound I-25 off-ramps at CO 60 and Larimer County Road 16. These closures will allow crews to paint new lane striping, relocate barriers and switch traffic onto new lanes as the project progresses.

  • Northbound I-25 on-ramp from CO 60 closure, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    • Northbound traffic will take southbound I-25 to exit 245, turn east on WCR 34 and enter northbound I-25.
       
  • Northbound I-25 on-ramp from CO 56 closure, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    • Northbound traffic will take southbound I-25 to exit 245, turn east on WCR 34 and enter northbound I-25.
       
  • Northbound I-25 off-ramp to CO 60 closure, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    • Johnstown traffic will continue north to exit 255, turn west on Colorado Highway 402, enter southbound I-25 and travel to exit 252.
       
  • Northbound I-25 off-ramp to LCR 16 closure, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    • Johnstown traffic will continue north to exit 255, turn east on CO 402, turn south onto the southeast Frontage Road and travel to LCR 16.
       
  • Northbound I-25 right lane closure between CO 56 and LCR 16, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Due to weather impacts, the full closure of the Western Frontage Road (County Road 5) south of LCR 16 will be in place through August. Please follow posted detour signs. Traffic will be diverted to County Road 7 between LCR 16 and LCR 14.

Johnstown to Fort Collins

To shift traffic into the new final alignment on southbound I-25, full closures of the southbound I-25 on-ramp and off-ramp at Harmony Road and southbound I-25 off-ramp to CO 392 will take place from 9 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 13 until 5 a.m., Monday, Aug. 14.

  • Southbound I-25 off-ramp to Harmony Road traffic will go south on I-25 to Exit 262/CO 392 and turn left. Continue back onto northbound I-25 to Exit 265/Harmony Road.
  • Southbound I-25 on-ramp from Harmony Road traffic will go north on I-25 to Exit 268/ Prospect Road and turn left. Continue west to the southbound I-25 on-ramp.
  • Southbound I-25 off-ramp to CO 392 traffic will continue south on I-25 to Exit 259/Crossroads Boulevard, turn east, and continue onto northbound I-25. Continue north on I-25 to Exit 262/CO 392.

To tie-in the new striping alignment on southbound I-25, full closures on the southbound I-25 on-ramp from eastbound US 34 and southbound I-25 off-ramp to CO 402 will take place from 9 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 15 until 5 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 16.

  • Southbound I-25 on-ramp from US 34 traffic will go north on I-25 to Exit 259/Crossroads Boulevard. Traffic will exit, turn left, and continue onto southbound I-25.
  • Southbound I-25 off-ramp to CO 402 traffic will continue south on I-25 to Exit 252/US 60, turn east and continue onto the northbound I-25 on-ramp. Continue north on I-25 to Exit 255/ CO 402.

To shift traffic into the new final alignment on the northbound I-25 on-ramps from US 34 full closures of the northbound I-25 on-ramps will take place from 9 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 16 until 5 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 17.

  • Eastbound US 34 to northbound I-25 traffic will go south on I-25 to Exit 255 / CO 402, turn left and continue onto northbound I-25.
  • Westbound US 34 to northbound I-25 traffic will go east on US 34 to Centerra Parkway. Proceed north on Centerra Parkway to Crossroads Boulevard, go west on Crossroads Boulevard to the northbound I-25 on-ramp.

To shift traffic on the northbound I-25 off-ramp to Prospect Road, a full closure of the northbound I-25 off-ramp will take place from 9 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 17 until 5 a.m., Friday, Aug 18

  • Northbound I-25 off-ramp traffic will continue north on I-25 to Exit 269/Mulberry Street and continue back on southbound I-25 to Exit 268/ Prospect Road.

To perform project maintenance and move safety barrier, project-wide nightly overnight single lane closures on I-25 will take place from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., Monday through Friday.

Daytime work, Monday - Friday, 7 a.m. - 6 p.m. 

Southbound I-25

  • Southbound traffic will be shifted into the median. Trucks may be entering or leaving the work zone. No lane changing in work zone - use caution.
  • Upcoming Traffic Shift Change: At 5 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 7, three southbound lanes will remain open with a traffic shift to the right.

The speed limit for southbound I-25 is 55 mph through the active work zone.  The speed limit for northbound I-25 has been temporarily increased to 65 mph until further notice to ease congestion.

Southbound West Frontage Road/I-25 On-Ramp at Exit 240

  • Left lane is closed 24/7 through August 2023. Construction crews will be working behind the barrier on the left shoulder.
  • Flaggers will assist motorists through the construction work zone.

Caution - Watch for increased truck traffic entering and exiting the work zone.

Northbound East I-25 Frontage Road

  • Right shoulder closure 
    • Construction crews will be working behind the cones/drums, prepping curb and gutter- Please use caution.
    • Trucks entering and exiting the dirt lot west of the Frontage Road.

The construction schedule is weather dependent and subject to change. 

Park-N-Ride
Caution - Watch for increased truck traffic entering and exiting the work zone - Leave plenty of time and space for trucks. Flaggers are in place to guide traffic.

Construction activities are weather-dependent and subject to change. Please watch for construction vehicles entering and exiting mainline I-25 and obey all posted signage in construction zones. Your safety and the safety of our crews is our highest priority.

The I-25 North Express Lanes Project provides a Courtesy Patrol during commute hours (6 to 9 a.m. and 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.) to assist with disabled vehicles within the Project limits from Johnstown to Fort Collins.

About the Project

Communities along the I-25 North corridor are expanding rapidly, contributing to major economic growth in northern Colorado. The Colorado Department of Transportation is supporting this growth by delivering the expansion of I-25 North. Improvements are currently underway along I-25 between Berthoud and Fort Collins (with more to come from Mead to Berthoud).

This project brings economic, environmental and quality of life benefits for northern Coloradans by:

  •  Making safety improvements to reduce the number of crashes and fatalities.
  •  Decreasing travel time and increasing trip reliability.
  •  Reducing emissions and improving freight efficiency.
  •  Improve congestion and safety.
  •  Rebuilding aging and obsolete infrastructure.
