Construction impacts for the week of Dec. 17, 2023

I-25 North Express Lanes: Now open for testing!

The I-25 North Express Lanes between Colorado Highway 56 and Prospect Road opened for testing as of 5 a.m. Friday, Dec. 15. Tolls will be waived during the testing period, and drivers are encouraged to try the Express Lanes by entering through the dashed white lines. When using the lanes, drivers are reminded to follow these rules to ensure the safety of everyone on the road:

• Do not cross the solid white lines (tickets for violations start at $75 each).
• Enter and exit at the designated areas only, which are marked with a white dotted line.
• Obey posted speed limits. The Express Lanes cannot be used to pass slower moving vehicles.

Motorists should expect various overnight and lane closures, including in the Express Lanes, while the last of the construction wraps up and tolling equipment is installed. The Express Lanes are anticipated to begin tolling in 2024. Once tolling begins in 2024, motorists are encouraged to sign up for an ExpressToll account to save an average of 40% on tolls.

Berthoud to Johnstown

The northbound I-25 center and right lanes at Colorado Highway 56 and at Larimer County Road 16, as well as the off-ramps at CO 56 and LCR 16 will be closed overnight on Dec. 15 and 16, 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Also, there will be I-25 center lane closures at CO 56 and at LCR 16 on Saturday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Johnstown to Fort Collins

From 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., nightly, Sunday through Thursday, crews will conduct intermittent single lane closures on I-25 between Colorado Highway 402 and Prospect Road.

From 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., nightly, Monday and Tuesday, crews will require double lane closures on US Highway 34 west of I-25.

From 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., nightly, Wednesday and Thursday, crews will conduct intermittent ramp closures at CO 402.

Firestone Mobility Hub

Daytime work, Monday - Saturday, 7 a.m. - 7 p.m.

Northbound I-25

• There is a new traffic shift into the median, with three lanes of traffic remaining open.

Southbound I-25

• Construction crews will be working on the left shoulder behind the barrier.
• Traffic Shift - Three lanes remain open with a shift to the right.

The speed limit for southbound and northbound I-25 is 55 MPH through the active work zone. 

East I-25 Frontage Road

• Construction crews will be working on the shoulder.
• Flaggers may be in place to guide motorists and trucks into and out of the work zone.

West I-25 Frontage Road

• Construction crews will be working on the left shoulder behind the barrier on the left lane and shoulder.
• One lane of through traffic. Access to southbound I-25 is open.

Construction activities are weather-dependent and subject to change. Please watch for construction vehicles entering and exiting mainline I-25 and obey all posted signage in construction zones. Your safety and the safety of our crews is our highest priority.

The I-25 North Express Lanes Project provides a Courtesy Patrol during commute hours (6 to 9 a.m. and 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.) to assist with disabled vehicles within the Project limits from Johnstown to Fort Collins.

About the Project

Communities along the I-25 North corridor are expanding rapidly, contributing to major economic growth in northern Colorado. The Colorado Department of Transportation is supporting this growth by delivering the expansion of I-25 North. Improvements are currently underway along I-25 between Berthoud and Fort Collins (with more to come from Mead to Berthoud).

This project brings economic, environmental and quality of life benefits for northern Coloradans by:

•  Making safety improvements to reduce the number of crashes and fatalities.
•  Decreasing travel time and increasing trip reliability.
•  Reducing emissions and improving freight efficiency.
•  Improve congestion and safety.
•  Rebuilding aging and obsolete infrastructure.
•  Improving bicycle, pedestrian and transit connectivity.
