NEWS RELEASE
LONGMONT PUBLIC LIBRARY

Kids love electronics, so why not turn that interest into an avenue for learning and skills building? That’s the idea behind the Longmont Public Library’s latest collection expansion for kids of all ages.

Playaways and Launchpads are durable, secure, high-quality tablets that are pre-loaded with materials for children from preschool through high school, and they are available now for checkout through the Library’s Curbside Delivery service.

Playaways are an audiobook and audiobook player all-in-one, perfect for children who prefer to listen to books rather than read them visually. For many children, reading comprehension and retention are improved through audio learning in place of or in conjunction with visual reading. The library has started this new collection with 96 Playaways that mostly feature popular fiction titles for children.

Playaways provide sound through a small built-in speaker system, but they can also be plugged into a car audio system with an AUX cable or used with headphones. The devices are child-friendly and simple to use; no internet, tablet, phone or CD player is required. Playaways check out for three weeks, and two renewals are allowed.

The library has also expanded its existing collection of Launchpad tablets. These durable, child-friendly tablets are pre-loaded with fun developmentally appropriate content.

Each tablet has a different theme and age level, everything from pre-K educational content to elementary level math games to book read-alouds to STEAM activities to test prep for teens. No internet is required, and the tablets only have access to the preloaded and librarian approved content. Launchpad tablets check out for three weeks with no renewals.

Playaways and Launchpads are great for keeping kids engaged and terrific for family road trips. Look for them in the library’s online catalog or call the Children's and Teens' Desk for more information at 303-651-8477.
