Butterfly Effect Theatre of Colorado (BETC) is pleased to open submissions for the 2022 Generations new playwriting residency program.

The BETC Generations program features work by parent playwrights with children under 18 and is celebrating its tenth-anniversary competition. The name comes from BETC’s goals for the program: to welcome all generations into the theater to see new plays and empower playwrights to generate new work.

Each season, BETC selects one playwright through a national competition to join the company in Colorado for a one-week residency. During the residency week, the playwright works with a professional director, dramaturg and actors to develop the selected script.

Over 175 parent playwrights entered submissions in 2021.

Of our past Generations winning scripts, BETC has produced three as world premieres: “Fourteen Funerals” by Eric Pfeffinger (pictured), “Birds of North America” by Anna Moench (pictured) and “Full Code” by David Valdes. Two past winners have since received National New Play Network Rolling World Premieres: “Babel” by Jacqueline Goldfinger and “The Madres” by Stephanie Alison Walker. Other past winning plays have gone on to productions and publication across the country, including scripts by Bernardo Cubría, Ken Weitzman, Jennifer Barclay and Simon Fill.

Those wishing to submit to the 2022 Generations program can do so at betc.org/generations. The deadline to submit is June 15, 2022, or when the 200-script submission cutoff is reached.
