Black Rock Elementary’s longtime music teacher Loretta Harvey has been named Teacher of the Year by the Colorado Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). The award was presented by Carol Thomas, Colorado State Commander of the VFW, during the school’s 5th Grade Continuation Celebration on Thursday, May 22, at approximately 9:15 a.m.

Mrs. Harvey, who was first recognized by the local VFW chapter in December, was selected for this prestigious state honor in recognition of her outstanding contributions to education and community pride.

Mrs. Harvey chose to receive the award in front of her students during one of Black Rock’s most meaningful year-end traditions. This moment was especially significant, as Mrs. Harvey is retiring this year after 16 years at Black Rock Elementary, a school she helped open.
