The trial for a man accused of shooting and murdering a man in Longmont is scheduled to begin on Monday.

Richard L. Martinez, 34, will be on trial for the death of Mathew Bond, 34, who was found dead by Longmont police in a stolen car on June 3, 2020. Martinez faces charges of first degree murder and attempted murder.

The trial was originally set for November after Martinez pleaded not guilty in April 2021. It was delayed due to competency concerns and again in January due to a surge in COVID-19 cases.

According to Longmont police, early in the morning on June 3, 2020, police were notified of a possible shooting on the northwest side of Longmont. The suspects and victims fled the area in separate vehicles, and police found the stolen vehicle that had been shot at over an hour later with Bond dead inside.

Police identified Martinez as a suspect in the murder and he was arrested in New Mexico on June 5, 2020.

The trial is scheduled to last seven days, according to court records.
