Allen Derry Pierson MD, 91, of Fort Collins, died Monday, December 7, 2020. Born in Spencer, Indiana, he was the son of Dr. Robert H. and Irene (Derry) Pierson. Allen attended Wabash College, graduating with a B.A. in 1951. He completed his MD at the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1955, interned at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, NY, and served in the US Navy Medical Corps as a Seabee Battalion Medical Officer in the Pacific from 1957-1959.

Home from his Navy service, Allen entered general practice in Leadville, Colorado, where he met and married Marilyn (Greene) Pierson. After completing his anesthesiology residency, he and his young family moved to Fort Collins in February of 1966 where he became the first anesthesiologist on the medical staff of Poudre Valley Hospital. He remained with PVH for 21 years, retiring in 1987.

Allen was an avid sailor, skier, hiker, and world traveler; a fan of classical music, the Denver Broncos and Colorado Rockies; and a prodigious reader - all passions he pursued for most of his adult life and shared with his children.

A generous and compassionate man, Allen was quick with a smile, and made friends for a lifetime. He was a member of the Foothills Unitarian Church from the late 1970s, where he appreciated the music and a good, challenging sermon.

Surviving are his brother Robert (Nancy) Pierson of NY; children Susan (Michael) Castellon of Fort Collins, Daniel (Carminda) of Wichita, KS, and Sarah, also of Fort Collins; stepdaughter Anne (Carlos) de Noronha of NY; grandchildren Nicholas and Caroline Castellon, Remi Pierson, and Matthew and Eva de Noronha; ten nieces and nephews; and his first wife Marilyn Pierson.

He was predeceased by his sister Mary Edith Velardi and his second wife Marilyn Barnes.

Information regarding his memorial can be found at Resthaven Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Red Cross of Larimer County, the Minister’s Fund of Foothills Unitarian Church, or your local PBS station.
