1935 - 2021

It is with great sadness that the family of Bernard Paul Winterberg, of Limon Colorado, announce his passing on Wednesday November 3, 2021, at the age of 86 years.

Bernie will be lovingly remembered by his daughters Sally (Timothy) and Kelly (Geoffrey) and two grandchildren, Natasha and Braedon, along with many other family and friends. Bernie was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Lily (née Cary), two brothers, Alan Carl and Donald Richard, former wife Patricia Marie (née Ryan), and infant daughter Vickie Lynn. Bernie Winterberg was born on March 6, 1935 in Kiowa, CO and was the second of 4 sons born to Paul and Lily Winterberg of Deertrail, CO. His brothers were Alan Carl, Donald Richard, and Ronald William Winterberg. In 1948, the Winterberg family moved to a farm on Resolis Road near Limon CO, when Bernie was about 13 years old. Bernie loved math and science and especially loved riding horses on the farm, once all of the chores were finished.

Bernie worked at several jobs in Limon including as a projectionist at the Lincoln Theatre and at Auto Service and Supply (now Hoffman Drug). Bernie moved to the Bay Area in Northern California in his late twenties where he became an accountant. It was there that he met and married Patricia Marie Ryan of Palo Alto, California on May 8, 1965. They were married for 19 years and were blessed with 3 daughters: Vickie Lynn, Sally Ann, and Kelly Marie. Throughout his life, Bernie devoted his time to serving God and helping others. He would regularly buy a stranger a meal or cup of coffee and would help them in any way he could. In his later years, with a twinkle in his eye, he would smile and say he was helping the ‘older folks’ at the care facility where he lived. One of the highlights of ‘helping out’ was to grow a long white beard and play Santa each year at Christmas time.

Some of Bernie’s favorite things to do were traveling, camping, walking, sharing stories about life and current events, visiting family (sometimes on very short notice!), playing games, and doing jigsaw puzzles. The family wishes to send a special thank you to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Lincoln Community Hospital and Care Center in Hugo, Colorado for their care, kindness, and compassion.
