Louis Loyd Kinkel was born on March 29, 1927 in Fort Morgan, Colorado to Carl and Daisy (Jacobsen) Kinkel. He died November 4, 2020 in Hugo, Colorado rejoining his beloved wife “Younger” Dean. Louis met Dean Brown at Colorado College, and they married on September 4, 1949. Lou and Dean, who he loving referred to as is “best friend,” were married for 68 years. They have three children Kathy (Neil), Carl (Julia), and Chuck (Glenda), eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Louis, Dean, and their three children moved to Limon in 1960 where he operated the Jack Frost Market for over 25 years, a job he loved. Louis was always quick to help others, from assisting a stranded traveler to ensuring the community’s health needs were met by top-notch providers.

He was an active member of the community and served as Mayor, town council member, President of the Chamber of Commerce, President of the Lions Club, member the Masonic Lodge, Limon Doctor’s Committee, and elder housing founder. He also served in the US Navy during WWII. He was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church and instrumental in organizing the Lentin breakfast, Wednesday night suppers, and his favorite, the Christmas cookie exchange. Louis and Dean were avid travelers and proudly journeyed to all seven continents, including walking with penguins in Antarctica. Louis will be fondly remembered for his beautiful vegetable gardens, quick smile, and ability to whistle Jingle Bells.
