January 31, 1936 - September 13, 2021

Maizie Nilles, 85, claimed the promise of her baptism entering eternal rest on September 12, 2021, surrounded by family.

Maizie was born January 31, 1936 in Greenville, Wisconsin to Edna and Ervin Peters.  She attended a one-room schoolhouse.  Maizie received a nursing degree from Columbia Hospital School of Nursing (Milwaukee Wisconsin) in 1956.  After graduation, she moved to Madison, Wisconsin to work as a surgical nurse.

Maizie married Paul Nilles on June 6, 1959.  After living for a short time in Indiana, Maizie and Paul moved to Moline, Illinois.  She worked as a supervisory nurse, typically during the swing shift, after caring for Paul and her children during the day.  Later in her career she was a school nurse at a local high school.  After retirement, she and Paul moved to Westminster, Colorado in 1991.  Maizie continued to volunteer tirelessly at the Denver Zoo, St. Anthony hospital emergency room, and Lutheran Church of Hope, among other volunteer service.  Maizie’s volunteer specialty was making baby blankets for children at Lutheran Church of Hope and other community churches.

Maizie was an amazingly giving woman, a loving mother, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother as well as a good friend to many. She was loved and admired by her family and friends for the courageous way she lived her life, especially the positive attitude she had in spite of her many surgeries over the past 20 years.  She always found ways to show how much she loved her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  They were always a loving part of her life, and Maizie was very proud of them.

Survivors include her husband Paul; her daughter Zita and wife Nancy of Olympia, Washington and Idaho; her sons Peter of Orion, Illinois; Paul and wife Vicki of Mead, Colorado; Richard of Champaign, Illinois; grandchildren Kyle Nilles of Lihue, Hawaii; Bri Hunter of Galesburg, Illinois; great-grandchildren Brantley and June Hunter of Galesburg, Illinois.  Maizie was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Marie (Wisconsin), brothers Richard (Wisconsin), Bob (Wisconsin) and Bill (Florida) and grandchild Mitchell Nilles (Colorado). Although Maizie will be greatly missed, she rests in God’s paradise with the saints of the church triumphant.

Maizie’s Liturgy of Resurrection is scheduled for Friday September 17th at 10:30am at Lutheran Church of Hope, Broomfield Colorado.  The service will be webcasted live at www.lchope.org/watch.
