Phyllis Ann Carlson Bender, of Lakewood Colorado passed away peacefully on October 14, 2021. She was born Astrid Phyllis Ann on December 3, 1929 in Milliken, Colorado. The daughter of Astrid (nee Anderson) and Herman Carlson. She grew up with her two older brothers, Norman and Melvin on a farm in Johnstown Colorado, where she graduated from Johnstown High School in 1947.
Phyllis graduated from the University of Colorado with a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. Following her graduation she served as a Denver Public School teacher and later librarian for 25 years. Phyllis shared her passion for reading and learning with her elementary school students.
She was married to Richard Clark Bender for 31 years until his passing in 1992. They had three children Paul, Lori, and Mark whom she was able to stay at home to raise. Phyllis loved being a stay at home mom, both she and Richard felt fortunate for the opportunity to do this. Phyllis dedicated a great deal of time and work fundraising for a cure for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation which later became the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. In her immediate family she was the only graduate of the University of Colorado and loved the Buffs, but over time was swayed to be a great supporter of the Colorado State University Rams
Her unique sense of humor, smile and compassionate heart left an imprint on many lives. She was a bright star and joyful person. Phyllis often would say "I am tiny but mighty", and those who knew her, know this was a fact. Phyllis was strongly devoted to family and friends, she will be forever cherished and greatly missed.
Phyllis was proceeded in death by her husband Richard and daughter-in-law Nicole. She is survived by her children Paul, Lori, and Mark, along with brother in law Jim Bender, two nieces and several nephews.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday October 26th at 10:00 am at Loveland Burial Park, Loveland Colorado.
A memorial service will be held Saturday November 6th at Holy Shepherd Lutheran Church in Lakewood Colorado at a time yet to be determined.
