Richard “Dick” Schmickle of Loveland, Colorado, formerly of Libertyville, IL passed away peacefully on Sept. 13, 2022 after a short illness.

Richard was born in Leavenworth, Kansas on July 28, 1932. He graduated from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa with a degree in civil engineering, and then was commissioned as an officer in the US Army during the Korean conflict.

He was married on April 16, 1955 to his wife Joan. While serving at Beale Air Force Base in California, his identical twin daughters, Susan and Nancy, were born.

After his discharge from the army, he was employed by the Portland Cement Association and worked in various positions until his retirement in 1997. He and his wife lived in Iowa, California, Minnesota, and Illinois. He enjoyed playing golf, watching football, playing cards, and traveling both in the United States and internationally.

In 2016 he moved to Loveland, Colorado. He had a view of the Rocky Mountains from his apartment and they became “his” mountains.

Richard was known throughout his life for his friendliness, humor and conversations with others. He will truly be missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Esther (nee Harder) and Robert Schmickle,  his sister, Roberta Stenstadvold, his wife, Joan Schmickle and daughter, Nancy Thompson. He is survived by his daughter, Susan Schmickle of Loveland, and three grandchildren, Luis, Roberto, and Catherine Thompson of Waynesburg, PA.

A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held on September 24 at 2:00 pm at Hillcrest of Loveland, 535 Douglas Avenue, Loveland, CO 80537.
