July 7, 1934 - March 28, 2022

In Loving Memory of Mom.

Verna Mae Compton, 87, of Arvada, Colorado, died on March 28, 2022, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Verna Mae (Grable) Compton was born on July 7, 1934, in Madison, South Dakota to Melvin and Bessie (Simons) Grable. The family moved to Highmore, South Dakota in 1945, where she graduated from Highmore High School.

After marrying her husband Jim, who was in the Air force, and having four children, James Jr, Becky, Susan, and Mark, the family moved to England and spent 3 years there.  From London, Verna traveled to several European countries and cities. She often talked about how much she liked seeing Greece and the Netherlands, even bringing home wooden shoes for all the kids. After leaving England and a brief stop in Missouri, the family settled in Arvada in 1972.

Verna spent her career as a purchasing agent for Geico, and after a brief retirement, went back to work in the same role for the Jefferson Center for Mental Health.

Verna loved spending time with her grandkids and shopping with her daughters.  And she almost never missed her kids’ soccer games.

She was active in the Methodist Church and particularly enjoyed finding new breakfast restaurants to try with her friends after services. She also loved college basketball.  She would usually be glued to her television during the March Madness tournament.

She is survived by her four children, James Jr.(Gayle), Becky Richards(Ron), Susan Bender(David), and Mark(Sonja); grandchildren Bobby(Becca), and Devin(Ryan); great-granddaughter Bailey.

A memorial service will be held at noon, on April 23rd at Rundus Funeral Home, 1998 W. 10th Ave, Broomfield, CO.  with a reception to follow at Verna’s home, 6937 Newcombe St, Arvada.  A private burial will take place at a later date in South Dakota.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the University of Colorado Urologic Cancer Research Fund.
