Four Colorado railroads have been ranked among the 10 Best Scenic Train Rides in the U.S., according to USA Today’s 2025 “10Best Readers’ Choice Awards.” Colorado was the only state with four entries on this year’s list, which is determined by public vote and highlights popular travel experiences nationwide.
The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad claimed the number one spot. Built in the 1880s, the line offers a nine-hour round trip through the San Juan Mountains, featuring restored steam locomotives, steep canyon walls, and views of the Animas River. It has consistently placed first in the rankings in recent years.
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad was ranked number two on the list. The 64-mile route crosses the Colorado–New Mexico border multiple times, passing through alpine forests, open meadows, and the Toltec Gorge. Designated a National Historic Landmark, it is one of the longest and highest narrow-gauge railways in North America.
The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway came in at number eight. Located near Colorado Springs, the railway climbs to the summit of Pikes Peak at 14,115 feet, offering panoramic views along the 9-mile ascent. It is the highest and longest cog railway in the world.
Rounding out Colorado’s representation at number 10 is the Georgetown Loop Railroad, a heritage route connecting the historic mining towns of Georgetown and Silver Plume. The 75-minute round trip includes high mountain bridges and preserved 19th-century rail infrastructure.
Governor Jared Polis acknowledged the recognition in a Facebook post. “We’re thrilled USA TODAY named the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad the best scenic train ride in the country, with the Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway and Georgetown Loop Railroad making the top ten,” he wrote.
The team at the Georgetown Loop Railroad also responded in a recent Instagram post. “We are honored to have been voted into the TOP TEN for the fourth consecutive year in the USA Today Readers’ Choice 10Best awards for Best Scenic Train Ride,” they wrote in the post. “Thank you to everyone for your consistent voting and your support of Colorado railroading history.”
