Opinion: Michael Bellmont--Dirty Politics Are Not Welcome in Longmont

For three years I have witnessed arguably the most hate-filled, conspiracy theory ridden, ad-hominem attacking, self-serving administration in Washington in our country's history.

Never did I expect such political poison to filter down to our own good City... but to my horror and disgust it was in full bloom recently in the form of a full-page feckless attack ad in the Longmont Times-Call targeting councilmember and candidate, Joan Peck by three former mayors, one former councilmember, and alarmingly Bonnie Fendley who is a sitting member of Longmont City Council.

Having felt helpless to address such deceit and malice on the national level, since this is a local act, I as a citizen of this town, have the opportunity, yea duty to call it out for what it is.

The ad was 12 quotes advancing a conspiracy theory about what computer server Ms. Peck used for a few emails over two years ago (sound familiar?). Never has a shred of wrongdoing been proven.

8 of the twelve quotes in the ad are anonymous with no source given likely from vindictive individual's opinions.

Notably, there is not one comment about Ms. Pecks' character or actions as a citizen of this town either privately or in her capacity as Council Member.

So, let me explain why the ad-makers conveniently avoided addressing Ms. Peck's long history both private and public that unassailably documents her force of character and loyal service to Longmont.

I have personally known Joan well for over 7 years and worked with her closely in 2012 on the initiative to protect our community from fracking to which she dedicated countless hours..well before her service on council. I found Joan to be straightforward, hardworking, dedicated, and passionate about protecting the community she loves.

As for her service on Coty Council, I don't blame the attackers for not mentioning her public record which clearly reveals her true character reflected in such things as always putting people before profit; being a champion for those that are powerless and less fortunate by advocating for affordable housing and the needs of the homeless while treating that
population with dignity; and fighting consistently to compel RTD to provide the rail service they promised and thus owe to Longmont

Joan is without political agendas or aspirations..always professional, speaking truthfully, listening thoughtfully.

In spite of recent significant personal loss she is willing to continue serving this community with her signature empathy, wisdom, and leadership.

Both in my personal experience as her friend and associate, and as is indelibly evident in her public service record Joan Peck merges everything we could hope for in a leader...hard work, dedication, wisdom, intelligence, and perhaps most importantly compassion, and empathy...In short.a good heart.
