Opinion: Ruby Bowman-Theresa Stets candidacy for HD 12

I support Theresa Stets’ candidacy for State House District 12. Theresa may be a new face on the political scene, but she has a solid background as a community activist on oil and gas issues.

I support Theresa Stets’ candidacy for State House District 12. Theresa may be a new face on the political scene, but she has a solid background as a community activist on oil and gas issues.

Boulder County residents have invested millions of dollars to acquire open space properties in their cities and unincorporated Boulder County in order to keep these properties from being developed and to preserve them for future generations. But in spite of conventional efforts to keep fracking off of open space, the threat of imminent oil and gas development remains a pressing issue in eastern Boulder County.

It is time to change course and try a different approach being offered by Theresa Stets.  She will introduce a Colorado Community Rights Amendment that will “put the right to govern back into the hands of communities.” Theresa also supports a bold and ambitious proposal to cease permitting new oil and gas extraction wells. It will be a tough fight, but at least she is thinking outside of the box. She is not going down the well-trodden road that ultimately ends in failure with the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, a state agency that advocates for the oil and gas corporations.

Citizens have the right to clean water, air, and a healthy environment to raise their families. Theresa Stets is a true independent progressive, who deserves a chance to fight for and fulfill her promise to Boulder County residents as a state legislator. Please join me in voting for Theresa Stets for State House District 12.
