A program offering free groceries to Longmont residents will keep providing food through March.

Friends of Longmont Youth announced the extension in a Wednesday news release, citing an increase in food security resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

In partnership with the Longmont Youth Center, Community Food Share, Longmont Food Rescue and Weld Food Bank, the grant-funded Friends of Longmont Youth grocery program since June has supplied more than 75,000 pounds of produce, proteins, pastas, rice, snacks and other nutritious foods through its weekly program, according to the release.

“The need for food support continues to be an issue for many Longmont families,” Meca Delgado, treasurer of the board of Friends of Longmont Youth, stated in the release. “Families are still facing unemployment, bills are still piling up, and this food goes a long way in alleviating both hunger and financial strain.”

The Community Meals Program grocery distribution is available to everyone and does not have income qualifications. Registration is not required. Pre-packaged groceries are available weekly, and families also can access services and resources related to employment, housing, child care and mental health support, according to the release. Drive-up and walk-up services are available at three distribution sites:

  • Emery Street Apartments, 1440 Emery St., from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Mondays.
  • River Valley Mobile Home Park, 10910 Turner Blvd., from 11 a.m. to12:30 p.m. Tuesdays.
  • Cloverbasin Village, 630 S. Peck Drive, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Fridays.

Distribution may be rescheduled because of weather and/or federal holidays. For more information and updated schedules, visit longmontcolorado.gov/food.

The Community Meals Program in October was awarded more than $10,000 from the Colorado COVID-19 Emergency Hunger Relief Fund and in September received $75,000 from the Colorado COVID Relief Fund.
