St. Vrain Valley School District on Oct. 14 updated the COVID-19 dashboard on its website to include more information on cases among students and staff.

The update includes a section for active cases, cumulative confirmed cases and cumulative cases as a percentage of total population. The latter does not break out the percentage of staff by school, since some staff members work in multiple buildings. The numbers are based on a student population of 31,435 and staff of 5,132.

Prior to the update, the dashboard, which was launched on Oct. 8, only tracked the number of active confirmed COVID cases reported by staff and students before and after the Oct. 5 start of the hybrid learning model that has students back in school buildings on a part-time basis.

"As we prepared to open schools in a hybrid model, we anticipated that there would be some disruptions as students and staff were quarantined based on the (Colorado Department of Health and Environment) protocols. In the event that we become aware of a positive and/or suspected case of COVID-19 in a classroom or a school environment, our local health department has assigned an epidemiologist and several contact tracers to St. Vrain who will work closely with our district nurses and leadership in determining and guiding the appropriate next steps," Kerri McDermid, the district's chief communications and global impact officer, said in an email Wednesday. "If the initial report of a confirmed or suspected case comes from a parent or staff member, we share that information with our health agency partners. If the initial report comes to the health agency, they share that information with our health services team."

McDermid also said individuals tied to cases of COVID-19 are interviewed by a public health official to assess their activities to determine the potential for spread of the virus. Additionally, those diagnosed and anyone with whom they have had close contact are instructed to stay home until no longer infectious or for 14 days after exposure.

Individuals who have the potential to be exposed are notified by phone prior to the entire school being updated by an emailed letter that includes information for parents on what to do next.

"If students are showing symptoms of COVID-19 or they have a confirmed case, parents should contact their school health clerk. Families will receive communication whenever a confirmed or suspected case impacts their school community. Communication regarding quarantines will be directly with those affected," McDermid said.

The district is updating the dashboard by 8:30 a.m. each weekday.
