A man has been arrested following an accidental shooting at a party in Superior that left a person in critical condition.

According to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, just after 3:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, a local hospital notified the Boulder County Communications Center that they were treating a patient suffering from a gunshot wound. He was described as being in critical condition and was transported to another hospital for a higher level of care.

The victim, a 21-year-old man, underwent surgery and is now in stable condition, a press release said.

The sheriff’s office said the circumstances of how the victim was shot were suspicious and detectives were called in to investigate further. The sheriff’s office determined that the shooting happened at a small party at an apartment in Superior.

According to the release, partygoers told investigators that people were drinking alcohol and playing with a handgun when the victim was accidentally shot. Two witnesses tended to the victim and took him to the hospital, where they stayed and cooperated with investigators, the release said.

The suspect who fired the weapon fled the scene immediately after the shooting, sheriff’s office officials said. That suspect was identified as Angel Serratos, 22, a resident of the home where the shooting occurred.

The release said Serratos was contacted at a home in Commerce City around 10:30 a.m. Saturday and taken into custody without incident. He was booked on second degree assault, tampering with evidence and prohibited use of a weapon.
