The Longmont Police Department is still searching for the person who started a bush fire on Sunday night by shooting bottle rockets out of a car window.

At around 12:15 a.m., a Longmont police officer responded to a call about a bush fire in the 1600 block of Main Street on the north side of 17th Avenue.

A witness told police that he saw a red SUV approach the intersection of 17th Avenue and Main Street. There an unidentified passenger of the vehicle began shooting bottle rockets out of the car’s window, according to Robin Ericson, the communications and marketing manager of LPD.

One of the bottle rockets hit a bush, causing it to catch fire.

Due to the high winds that night, the bush fire erupted into flames quickly. Flames from the bush were near the hanging branches of a nearby tree when police arrived on the scene, although they hadn’t spread yet, Ericson said.

Once the suspect observed the fire, they fled the scene rapidly, the witness told police.

Longmont fire personnel responded to the area and extinguished the fire.

If anyone has any information related to this case, they’re asked to contact Longmont Police Services at 303-651-8555 and reference case #22-2834.
