Longmont Winchell's hopes to reopen by the end of this year.

A popular Longmont donut shop still plans to reopen despite some rumors claiming otherwise.

Owner Joe Barmada said on Thursday he’s not sure when Winchell’s will reopen, but it will definitely be opening again.

Winchell’s closed in December after a car hit the building.

“The whole shop is cracked, so now we’re rebuilding the whole thing,” Barmada said.

He added that the structure housing Winchell’s was built in 1964, so there’s a lot of work to be done to bring it up to code. The rebuild depends on a number of factors outside Barmada’s control, including permitting, insurance and finding a contractor, which are all taking longer than expected.

Barmada estimated a November reopening date for Winchell’s.

“We’re coming back better and bigger,” he said.
