Longmont Leader received the following letter from Lindsay Pollard-Post about toxic foods for dogs:

Most people know that chocolate is toxic to dogs. But did you know that some brands of peanut butter are, too? Check the ingredients: If it contains xylitol—a sweetener also found in some kinds of toothpaste, gum, mints, medicines, and baked goods—ingesting even a small amount can be fatal for dogs.

March 17-23 is National Poison Prevention Week, and we can all help prevent poisonings by keeping toxic substances out of our homes and yards—or at least storing them safely out of animals’ reach. Remember, cats can jump and knock down items, and dogs can chew through purses and backpacks.

Grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, macadamia nuts, bread dough, medications, vitamins, alcohol, and marijuana are some of the poisons most frequently ingested by dogs and cats. Poisonous plants include lilies, tulip and daffodil bulbs, sago palms, azaleas, rhododendrons, and mushrooms. Cocoa mulch and many fertilizers are also toxic. Never use rodent poisons—they are extremely cruel and can also kill cats and dogs who consume them.

If you suspect that your animal has been poisoned (signs include vomiting and diarrhea, drooling, lack of appetite, lethargy or restlessness, pale gums, seizures, and collapse), call your veterinarian or the Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661 immediately.
