It surprises many Americans to learn that less than 1% of the federal budget goes toward foreign aid. Yet this small investment fuels massive global returns: clean water, maternal health, education, and economic opportunity in some of the world’s most vulnerable places. It also creates markets for American goods, reduces displacement, and builds global stability.
As a Berthoud resident and advocate with The Borgen Project, I’ve been urging our elected officials to support legislation like H.R.1123 and maintain the International Affairs Budget. These tools aren’t charity—they’re smart strategy.
Colorado has long been a key player in the fight against global poverty. From nonprofits like Project C.U.R.E. and Engineers Without Borders to universities like CSU and DU, our state exports more than goods—we export expertise, innovation, and compassion. Our global engagement strengthens not just developing nations, but our own economy and moral leadership.
I respectfully urge Representative Gabe Evans, Senator Hickenlooper, and Senator Bennet to support these life-saving efforts. Colorado matters in this fight—and so does their leadership.
Sincerely,
Avery Prewitt
