Spring is one of the busiest seasons for home services businesses, and a local company is sharing tips as the Longmont area emerges from a cold and snowy winter.

TNT Home Services, which provides plumbing and HVAC services, published its Longmont Spring 2023 Home Services Report this month. The report found that Monday before 9 a.m. is the best time to call a local plumber or home services, while Wednesday at noon is the worst.

“Typically customers think that Monday morning is the worst time to call, but the reality is that most people are either commuting or just starting to put together their to-do lists at this time,” TNT Regional GM Daniel Valenti said. “On top of that, Monday and Tuesday have the most open appointment availability, so customers are more likely to get a technician to their home quickly if they call on Monday.”

He added that people are more likely to call during their lunch breaks, so homeowners should try to call before 10 a.m. if they have to call later in the week. The 80504 zip code had the most service calls in 2022, according to the company’s report.

The report said the most important thing a homeowner can do in the spring is preventive maintenance on their HVAC system. Replacing an HVAC system can cost close to $11,000 compared to an average for $344 for repairs in Longmont — and just $99 for an average HVAC maintenance appointment.

Valenti noted that the colder and snowier winter this year can have several impacts on HVAC systems.

“Freezing temperatures can cause moisture present in the unit to freeze and expand, potentially damaging the components,” he said. “Heavy snow buildup on and around the unit may lead to blocked airflow, reduced efficiency and potential electrical hazards. Additionally, ice dams can form on the roof above the HVAC unit, causing water to back up and potentially damage the unit or its components.”

He explained that regular HVAC maintenance can prevent major issues and improve indoor air quality.

“Additionally, a well-maintained system provides improved efficiency and performance, ensuring your comfort on the hottest and coldest days,” Valenti said. “Moreover, you'll benefit from reduced energy bills and save money, as your systems won't need to work as hard to maintain a comfortable temperature in your home.”

TNT has seen a huge jump in efficiency interest, up 203% in the first quarter of the year compared to this time last year. Homeowners can use up to $3,200 of federal tax credits to make energy-efficient upgrades, which homeowners can learn about through Energy Star or tax advisor.

“Homeowners are encouraged to contact TNT Home Services and speak with one of our experienced advisors,” Valenti added. “Our team is well-versed in the tax credits and rebate programs available through the Inflation Reduction Act.”

Many system upgrades are covered under the Inflation Reduction Act or similar legislation.

“Upgrading to energy-efficient central air conditioners or furnaces can significantly reduce your energy bill and enhance your comfort, as heating and cooling typically account for over half of a homeowner's energy expenditure,” Valenti said. “Though these systems are more expensive than entry-level, lower efficiency systems, rebates and tax credits make them more affordable and accessible.”

Investing in an efficient water heater or smart thermostat are other upgrades Valenti advised homeowners to consider.
