Beginning today, the Longmont City Clerk’s Office will accept nomination petitions for the elected offices of mayor, two at-large city council members, and one city council member from Ward II until August 25. The city said that qualified candidates may begin circulating nomination petitions on August 5 and must file completed petitions with the city clerk by 5 p.m. on Monday, August 25.
Circulating nomination petitions is the third out of four steps that candidates must complete in order to be included on the ballot in November. Candidates must become “Certified Candidates” by circulating a nomination petition. “Nomination petitions can only be circulated during the designated time frame, must contain at least the appropriate number of signatures for the particular seat, and be signed by Longmont residents who are registered to vote, and who reside within the specific ward, if for a ward seat,” the city said.
Candidates for at-large positions, including mayor, must have petitions signed by at least 50 qualified electors. Candidates for ward positions must have petitions signed by at least 25 qualified electors from the ward in which the candidate is seeking election.
Before circulating a nomination petition, candidates must complete two other steps: filing a candidate affidavit within 10 days of announcing their candidacy publicly, and attending a candidate orientation session. After completing the nomination petition process, candidates must go through a final step before being included on the ballot, which is to form a candidate committee.
Positions within the Longmont City Council that are up for election this year are the mayoral seat, one Ward II seat, and two at-large seats. The current list of candidates for Longmont City Council is available online.
The regular municipal election will be held on Tuesday, November 4.
