A 30-year-old man was sentenced to 10 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections for a July 2021 incident in which he shot at his stepson in Longmont.

Marshall Neil Aamodt pled guilty to attempted second-degree murder, class 3 felony. On Friday, a district court judge sentenced Aamodt to 10 years. Boulder County District Attorney’s Office recommended 16 years in state prison, according to a news release from the DA’s office.

Aamodt and his stepson got into an argument over household chores, the news release states. The stepson left the house to go to work and the argument spilled out into the driveway, where Aamodt menaced his stepson with a knife.

The stepson attempted to leave and get to safety but as he left in his truck, Aamodt fired two rounds at him and his truck, the news release states. Although no one was injured, there were other homes and cars in the area when Aamodt fired his gun, the DA’s office said.

“The Defendant’s actions in this case were unbelievably dangerous and posed a risk to the direct victim as well as those living in, and traveling through, the immediate vicinity at the time of the incident,” Chief Trial Deputy District Attorney Adrian Van Nice, said in the news release.

“We are pleased with the court’s sentence in this case as it reflects the seriousness of those actions and makes clear that the use of a handgun, or any other weapon, in a fit of rage will not be tolerated in this community,” Van Nice said.

“Boulder County is not immune from the challenges facing all communities – including gun violence. The trauma resulting from shootings, both to the victim and the community at large, can have lifelong effects that the criminal justice system must address,” District Attorney Michael Dougherty said in the news release.

“I appreciate the courage of this victim, the hard work of law enforcement, and the dedication of our prosecution team in securing this just outcome,” Dougherty said.
