In an effort to inform and educate the Longmont community on reporting child abuse and ways to get involved with organizations helping child victims, Mayor Brian Bagley and the Longmont City Council proclaimed April 2018 as 'Child Abuse Prevention Month' in Longmont on Tuesday evening.

No one was present to accept the proclamation.

Voices for Children, CASA is a non-profit located in Boulder County whose mission is to "provide trained, court-appointed volunteers to advocate for abused and neglected children in Boulder County." CASA stands for court appointed special advocates.

According to the proclamation, "there are more than 2,500 substantiated reports of child abuse in Boulder County each year and approximately 300 children living in foster care in Boulder County due to abuse, that number having increased every year for the past four years."

April has been recognized as the national child abuse prevention month since it was first proclaimed by President Reagan in 1983.

Longmont City Council also proclaimed April 2018 as 'Parkinson's Disease Awareness Month' on April 3, 2018.
