A regional anti-fracking group next week is holding a virtual discussion focused on oil and gas drilling and its potential for causing environmental and health hazards in Boulder County.
The Boulder County Fracking Ban Coalition in a news release stated the event on Oct. 7 is attracting experts and candidates for Boulder County commissioner to talk about fracking in the county.
Participants in the forum will discuss the status of regulations at the county and state level, according to the coalition, which describes itself as an organization of 57 groups and businesses representing over 130,000 local residents. Sustainable Resilient Longmont is among the member groups.
Boulder County commissioners in July opted not to put an oil and gas development ban on the November ballot.
All four candidates running for county commissioner in November have been invited to participate in the panel discussion and all are expected to participate, according to the release. Speakers will include state Sen. Mike Foote, D-Lafayette, and Boulder County Commissioner Matt Jones
The event, which also will include time for audience questions, will be from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. Oct. 7 via Zoom video conference. Those who wish to attend can register here.
There are 140 fracking wells currently proposed in Boulder County, according to the coalition, which in the release stated, “In addition, to the significant contributions to climate change by fracking, these wells would contribute to further degrading air quality in the county, which is already rated ‘failing’ by the American Lung Association.”
