The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) is calling for volunteer On-Scene and Outreach Advocates to assist crime, accident and trauma victims. Ideal applicants will be at least 21 years old with calm, compassionate, emotionally mature, and non-judgmental demeanor. BCSO is asking for all applications to be submitted by the deadline of 5 p.m. on Friday, August 22. No prior experience is necessary.

Volunteers will be on call for a specific time period each month and they are expected to respond to the scene of the incident, the police department, or the hospital upon receiving a call. The volunteer will be present with the victim during the aftermath of the crisis incident. Weekday shifts are 12 hours starting at 6 a.m. The weekend shift is a 48-hour period starting Saturday at 6 a.m. and ending on Monday at 6 a.m. Volunteers are needed for all shifts.

Outreach Advocates will be assigned to a victim and will reach out to them by phone, mail, or email. During this contact, the volunteer will provide the victim with information, advocacy, and referrals. They will also collect information from the victim and coordinate with law enforcement and the criminal justice system. Outreach advocates should coordinate with the victim’s schedule to communicate this information, but are expected to contact the victim within 48 hours of the assignment.

Volunteers accepted into the victim assistance program are required to attend 40 hours of training on Tuesday evenings, Thursday evenings, and Saturdays from September 9 through 27. Advocates will learn about crisis intervention, grief response, legal rights, legal procedures, law enforcement, and resource information.

Interested individuals can find more information and apply online or call 303-441-3656.
