Recently, Boulder County and other partners received a $25 million RAISE grant that filled the gap to begin the redesigning process for CO 119. At its September meeting, Commuting Solutions, a partner in the project, shared recent updates on the project.
CO 119 runs between Longmont and Boulder. The proposed project includes adding multimodal options along the length of the highway. It will include more options for Bus Rapid Transit which is expected to drastically reduce the commute time between the two cities.
The center median will house a 12-foot-wide bike and pedestrian path with bikeway underpasses planned along the path.
The entire project is expected to cost $161 million and has secured funding for the entire project, group leaders stated.
The project is still in its early stages. The first step is to add rumble strips along the highway to ensure cyclists’ safety. The design was completed on Sept. 13 and is currently out to bid. The county hopes to begin construction by late October.
The county plans to use a construction manager/general contractor delivery method which allows for contractor feedback on the design, flexibility in work schedule and options for incremental funding.
Staff working on this project expect it to take between 30-36 months to complete.
