With little comment, the City Council Tuesday night agreed to meet next week to talk about the city’s gun laws.

The meeting is at the request of Mayor Joan Peck, who told the Leader earlier this week that a session was needed to discuss gun safety measures. Peck said she was not promoting any particular gun policy, leaving that debate for the council members.

Peck pushed for a pre-session discussion before the regular council meeting on June 14.

“I want to do this sooner rather than later,” Peck said. The Mayor said Longmont needs to review its gun laws given recent mass shootings, including last year’s at a Boulder King Soopers.

Boulder, Louisville and Lafayette, Superior this week have either passed new restrictive gun ordinances or are preparing to do so, according to Fox31.

The Boulder ordinance calls for:

  • Banning the sale and possession of assault weapons, large-capacity magazines and rapid-fire trigger activators, raising the age to purchase firearms.
  • Prohibiting the carrying of firearms in certain public places.
  • Regulating the the possession of unfinished frames and receivers, and unserialized firearms.
  • Outlawing open and concealed carry in sensitive places like hospitals, schools and places worship
  • Requiring firearm dealers to post signs outside of their stores explaining the dangers of firearms.
