Longmont may hire University of Colorado-Boulder researchers to study how humans walking and hiking on trails in the city impacts native plants.
The proposed intergovernmental agreement is part of a funded research program in the city’s Parks and Natural Resources division to provide grants for scientific research, monitoring and resource inventories to third parties to “help further the city’s understanding of our natural resources and management practices,” a city staff report to the city council states.
City staff evaluated several proposals received through a competitive request for proposals system and selected one from a principal investigator from CU-Boulder to receive a grant.
The $2,751, 29 grant is slated for CU Boulder’s Eagle Wind Trail Research, the staff report states.
The results of the research will help the city determine how to best limit the negative impacts trails may have on plant species. The research will start this year, the city staff report states.
