A drone will take to the skies Thursday morning above Dickens Farm Nature Area, Golden Ponds Nature Area and possible locations along the St. Vrain Greenway.

During the flight, the drone will shoot footage for a video project that, in partnership with Recycle Colorado, will be part of a six-month campaign “to inform and educate residents about proper recycling habits,” Cara Wilwerding, public relations and marketing specialist for Longmont Public Works and Natural Resources, said via email.

“Tomorrow they’ll be using the drone to film general footage of the city,” Wilwerding said.

Recycle Colorado is paying for all costs and has hired Hidden Woods Media to do the filming, she said.

The Recycle Colorado campaign, which kicked off in August, will test six recycling messages intended to increase recycling collection, according to a post on the organization’s website. A different recycling message will be tested monthly until the campaign ends in January.

“The ads will be bilingual (English and Spanish) and will address themes such as how recyclables are transformed into second-life products, how recycling helps preserve Colorado’s great outdoors, and the importance of the recycling industry for job creation in Colorado’s economy,” the post states.

The campaign will be tested in three communities: Longmont, Commerce City, and Thornton. “These cities were selected because each city collects the majority of its recycling through a single hauler, which allows for optimal data tracking,” according to Recycle Colorado.

The drone flight will take place between 9 and 11 a.m. Thursday, weather permitting.
