Drones will be flying near Union Reservoir Wednesday afternoon.

The city on Tuesday announced that an unmanned aerial system would take flight between 1 and 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Union Reservoir air quality monitoring site. The flight is being conducted to support Environmental Services and Public Information activities in collaboration with Longmont Public Media, according to a news release

The city is collaborating with Longmont Public Media to create a video introducing air quality monitoring stations at Union Reservoir and Vance Brand Airport and footage shot Wednesday will be part of the video, according to Cara Wilwerding, public relations and marketing specialist for the Public Works and  Natural Resources Department.

In an email Tuesday afternoon, Wilwerding said Longmont’s aim in introducing the monitoring stations, as part of a city council-approved air quality study, is to contribute to Colorado air quality research by:

  • Understanding what’s in the air we breathe every day;
  • Understanding the sources of any pollution, and
  • Gathering long-term (multi-year) data to understand trends over time.
