St. Vrain Valley School District reported, during the school board meeting, that student enrollment numbers are on the rise.

During the 2020-2021 school year, SVVSD saw a decline of 1,105 students compared to the previous year. The district attributed the decline to the coronavirus pandemic and the shifts between hybrid and fully remote learning.

According to an article by Chalkbeat, declining enrollment hit many school districts across the state. The news publication learned that some students simply did not show up for school while others enrolled in other districts.

In Wednesday night’s meeting, Superintendent Don Haddad reported that a count conducted last Monday saw an increase of 790 students in PreK through 12th grades. He added that another count was conducted today and he is waiting for results to come in.

An official enrollment count happens each year in early October. On this day, the district counts the number of students enrolled in order to determine future facility planning, according to the district website.

For the October Count the district will note “changes in enrollment at a school by grade level, as well as provides information on birth numbers, free/reduced lunch counts, ethnic breakdowns, English language learners, private school and home school enrollment, the impacts of choice, enrollment projections, capacity, building permit activity by community and a variety of other indicators,” according to the website.

In his report to the school board, Haddad said that it is not uncommon for more students to trickle in through Labor Day and that he was encouraged by the upward trend of the enrollment numbers.
